Abstract
Introduction: Osteoporosis is a metabolic disorder that decrease the bone mineral density. Osteoporosis risk can be predicted using indices such as panoramic mandibular index (PMI) and Watanabe index (WI) which are measured in panoramic dental images. In this study, we decided to compare WI and PMI indices in different age and sex groups.

Material and methods:  This analytical cross-sectional study was performed on patients that referred to the faculties of guilan university of medial science in 2022-2023 . The study included 120panoramic radiographs from patient aged 20-70 years ( 60 men and 60 women ). The WI and PMI indices were measured for them under the supervision of a maxillofacial radiologist. Age, sex , and WI and PMI values were statistically analyzed.(α=0.05)
Results: The mean PMI was 0.25 ± 0.05, and the mean WI was 0.83 ± 0.07. A significant difference was observed in mean PMI between men and women (P = 0.014), and mean WI also differed significantly between sex (P < 0.001). A significant relationship was found between WI and age, with WI decreasing as age increased (P < 0.05). However, no significant relationship was observed between age and PMI (P = 0.093).
Conclusion: The WI index has a significant relationship with age and sex , and it is higher in younger males. Meanwhile, the PMI index has a significant relationship only with sex and is higher in men than women.WI showed a stronger association with  age and sex compared to PMI in this population.
