Abstract: (240 Views)
Introduction: Negative experiences during pediatric dental procedures can lead to avoidance of future care, impacting oral health. Understanding psychological factors influencing behavior is crucial for effective management and improved outcomes. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire(SDQ) may predict behavior, but its application in this context is understudied.
Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study of 163 Iranian children (aged 4-12 years) undergoing their first dental visit assessed psychological characteristics using the SDQ and behavioral cooperation during local anesthesia injection using the Frankl Behavior Rating Scale in 2023. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square, ANOVA, and independent t-tests.
Results: A high prevalence (56.4%) of abnormal mental health scores was found using the SDQ. Older children demonstrated significantly better cooperation during anesthesia (p=0.007), while gender differences were not significant (p=0.192). A significant positive association (p=0.003) existed between higher SDQ scores and poorer cooperation.
Conclusion: This study highlights the significant impact of children's psychological profiles on their behavior during dental procedures. The SDQ shows promise as a pre-visit screening tool to identify children at risk of behavioral challenges, enabling proactive individualized management strategies to optimize the dental experience and improve long-term oral health. Limitations include convenience sampling and a cross-sectional design. Future research should explore causal relationships and the effectiveness of targeted interventions.
